[www.inewsguyana.com] – Tiffon Peters, 22 years, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who was in police custody at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost, was found hanging in the lock-ups from his shirt which he had stripped into a cloth-rope and tied to the metal grill work of the lock-ups.
A police statement noted that the discovery was made around 19:30hrs on Thursday, January 22 when another prisoner who was awakened by gasping sounds alerted the police after seeing Peters hanging. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the Police, Peters was taken into custody at about 14:30 hrs on Wednesday January 21, following investigations into a report of simple larceny of $25,000 committed on Dhanwattie Singh of Houston, East Bank Demerara.
The incident reportedly occurred at Vlissengen Road and Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. The young man was charged and was scheduled to appear in Court on Friday, January 23.
The Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the incident.
