[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 21 – year – old woman of Silver City, Linden was yesterday (Monday, September 29) remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine – Beharry for the unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
Elizabeth Winter pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which alleged that on Thursday, September 25 at 14 Miles, Issano Mazaruni, she had in her possession five live .22 rounds of ammunition when she was not the holder of a firearm license.
Particulars of the other charge stated that on the same day at 14 Miles, Issano Mazaruni, she also had in her possession one .22 revolver without a firearm license.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the Court that on the day in question Police made contact with the defendant and with her permission a search was carried out at her living quarters. As a result of the search, the firearm and ammunition were found under her mattress.
Prosecutor Grant opposed bail on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the offence and the fact that no special reason was given to the Court for bail to be granted.
However, the woman’s Lawyer told the Court that the weapon was was found in a shop and not in her client’s camp. The lawyer opposed bail, stating that Winter is the mother of a four – year – old and has no prior or pending matters.
She was nevertheless remanded to prison and the case was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court for October 9.
