20-Y-O pedal cyclist killed by speeding, intoxicated driver

A 20-year-old pedal cyclist lost his life in an accident which occurred at around 23:40hrs on Sunday along the Tuschen Old Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Dead is Kazim Hamid, a labourer of Zeelugt, EBE.

Police said a motorcar, driven by a Tuschen resident, was proceeding east along the roadway at a fast rate, when the vehicle collided with the pedal cyclist, who was proceeding west.

As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the windscreen of the car and then onto the roadway. He was then dragged about 40ft from the point of impact.

The pedal cyclist was picked up in an unconscious state and conveyed to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, and he was found to be above the prescribed limit (.44 and .46 micrograms in his system).

At about 10:00hrs today, the driver, Mark Braithwaite, was charged with the offence of ‘Driving Motor Vehicle while his Breath Alcohol Level Exceed the Prescribed Limit’, in contravention of Section 39 A (1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, Chapter 51:02.

He appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded guilty and was fined $50,000.
