[www.inewguyana.com] – A 20 – year – old Miner was today [January 02] remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a manslaughter charge.
Alex Higgins of Lot 542 ‘D’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown was not required to plea to the indictable charge which alleged that on December 27, 2014 at Konawaruk, Potaro he unlawfully killed Devon Fraser.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant opposed bail on the nature and seriousness of the offence.
The Prosecutor said that the charge was instituted against Higgins based on a confession statement he gave to the police, where he alleged that Fraser attacked him and he defended himself.
However, Grant said that through investigations it was revealed that it was the 20 – year – old accused who attacked Fraser. He told the Court that as long as statements are received from the eyewitnesses, a murder charge is likely to be instituted against Higgins.
Higgins was lifted into Court by investigating ranks and he sat during his arraignment and it was explained by Grant that the accused had been chopped in relation to another incident by persons living in a nearby area.
The accused was unrepresented and bail was refused. The matter was adjourned to January 19, 2015. Reports are that about 23:45 hours on Christmas Eve (December 24) Fraser, 26, of Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice, was involved in an altercation with Higgins at Konawaruk, during which he was stabbed about his body.
The police, in a release, said that Higgins also suffered injuries and both men were admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Fraser succumbed on December 27.
