[www.inewsguyana.com] – Nineteen – year – old Ramraj Singh of Foulis Enmore, East Coast Demerara allegedly faked his own kidnapping and demanded $3.5 million as ransom from his relatives.
He was napped during a police sting operation and was charged with attempting to commit a felony. The young man appeared before Magistrate Ms. Z. Alli at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Monday March 31, 2014.
He has been placed on bail in the sum of $200,000 and will return to court on April 14.
According to the Police, on March 25, relatives of the young man reported to the police that at about 19:15h March 24, they received a telephone call to the effect that he had been kidnapped and a demand of $3.5M was made for his safe return.
Singh was reported to have left home earlier during the evening to buy a phone card.
Based on subsequent police investigations, including the tracking of phone calls, it was suspected that the “kidnapping” had been concocted.
As a result, a sting operation was set up and the “kidnap victim” was arrested on March 26 as he turned up to pick up the “ransom money” at the agreed on location.
