A father of three has been arrested after he was accused of sexually molesting a 17-month-old baby girl in Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Reports are that an investigation was launched into the matter after a doctor at New Amsterdam Hospital made a report that the child’s hymen was ruptured as a result of some sort of penetration.
According to the baby’s 18-year-old mother, who hails from the Corentyne coast in Berbice, the incident took place on Sunday.
The mother, whose identity has been withheld, said that on Sunday afternoon her daughter was at a neighbour’s home when she heard the infant crying.
Upon investigating, she discovered that the neighbour had just showered the child and when she enquired why that was done she was told that the child fell and as such was given a bath.
INews understands that the mother took her daughter home but later noticed that she was bleeding from her vagina.
“When me carry she to the hospital and the hospital take out she pampers, the doctor say this is not a fall because this aint got no black and blue, this is somebody finger went in she vagina,” the mother lamented.
The mother was advised by medical personnel to report the matter to the police and consequently the neighbour was arrested.
Meanwhile, relatives of the young mother are reportedly peeved about the way the matter is being handled by a social worker at the Whim office of the Social Protection Ministry.
The child has since been placed in the custody of her grandmother.
Information revealed that prior to Sunday’s incident, the mother was taken to the probation department, which advised that the neighbour take an active role in the child’s life and recommended that the child’s biological relatives not be allowed to adopt the infant.
However, the probation officer could not give reasons for such a recommendation. The mother is accusing the probation officer’s initial actions for the harm which was caused to the 17-month-old baby.
The police sexual offence department at Whim is investigating the incident.

Now, why can’t we hear any comments from the minister of social services or even the politicians or even the president of Guyana? Why are they silent? If it was up to me the probation officer will be jailed like for life because this child might be scarred for life..No one knows as yet the real damages..
Probation Officers does act like they are Gods and only they know best and in some cases some probation officers think they are God.
I had caused to chase one so called probation officer from my house when she asked me to help her spy on a hard working mother.. Just because that mother did not answer her phone when the so called probation officer (PO) called her…No matter how the mother tried explaining to this so called probation officer that she is not allowed to have her phone on her person while working…Then had the gall to ask me to check up on the child at 11 every night to make sure the child was in bed..So PO wanted me to leave my house and go over to this child place to ensure the mother had the child in bed at 11 every night..I asked the P O what the hell was that? Why checking on this child at that time have anything to do with what happened at school during the day? P O said please do as I ask..I told her ‘No’ I will never spy on my neighbour for you so you can enhance your career..I called the child welfare office and report the P O ..Happy to say that that P O is no more..She should be digging shit instead of being a Probation Officer..
