Fifty – five – year old Anita Mearus, 58 – year – old Clement Persaud and a 15 – year – old girl were placed on $50,000 bail each when they appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
All three accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court was told that between July 01 and 31, the three accused attempted to obstruct the course of justice in a case against the 15 – year – old girl who was previously charged with break and enter and larceny.
The prosecution’s case is that the teen was charged by the police and is before the court for break and enter and larceny and her parents Anita Mearus and Clement Persaud made contact with one of the witness in that case and requested that he do not show up in court to give his evidence.
Based on the seriousness of the offence, the penalty attached and the fact that the trio may not return to court for trial, the prosecutor objected to bail. The prosecution’s objection was however overruled by the Magistrate and the three accused will return to court on September 16. [Royan Abrams]
