[www.inewsguyana.com] – Twenty – Two – year – old Anand Rameshwar of Lot 257 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was today sentenced to 12 months imprisonment each on two charges.
The sentence will run concurrently. The young man made his first appearance in court on December 5, 2013 and pleaded not guilty to the charges, which alleged that between November 30, 2013 and December 1, 2013 at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, broke and entered stall 28 and stole five bags of Full Cream Milk powder valued $180,000, property of Gavin Paul.
The second charge stated that on the same day he broke and entered stall 29 at Stabroek Market belonging to Shamsundar Raghubar with intent to commit a felony.
The court heard that five out of the 17 bags of milk powder were missing from the stalls and the defendant was found in the market on December 1, 2013. After he noticed the police, he tried to escape but was apprehended.
Based on the evidence provided by the prosecution he was found guilty, during a trial.
Magistrate Chandan-Edmond took into consideration the youngster’s age and the fact that he is a first time offender among other factors before instituting her sentence.
